Baby Cribs Are Not Built Like They Used To Be

When I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, I remember going shopping for baby cribs. I visited a number of locations, only to find that I didn’t have much to choose from. The biggest decision to be made was whether I wanted one made from light or dark wood. I narrowed my choices down to cherry and oak, and I eventually decided upon the oak crib.

A few years later, I found myself shopping for baby cribs once again. By this point in time, my oldest daughter was sleeping in a toddler bed. It had a metal frame that housed a crib mattress. The bed was white in color. I was able to find a crib that matched it perfectly, and I was very excited, considering the girls shared a bedroom. I remember thinking how far they had come in the area of baby furniture. I didn’t have to choose a wooden crib.

Today, baby cribs are not built like they used to be. There are so many styles to choose from. You can get a traditional crib made of wood or metal, but you can also get a crib that is functional throughout the child’s life. There are cribs that convert to toddler beds. There are also those that later convert from a toddler bed to a twin bed. These are, of course, more expensive than a traditional crib. However, the initial added expense is well worth it, as you do not have to purchase a toddler bed or a twin bed as the child grows. These are often called “lifetime cribs”. There are also cribs that have changing tables attached to them. While more expensive, these eliminate the need to purchase separate changing tables. Since most of these changing tables later convert to dressers, these units are also fully functional throughout the child’s life.
